Tom Hutton

Chairman Tom Hutton founded New Energy Risk in 2011 and served as the company’s initial CEO. As an entrepreneur, veteran insurtech venture investor, and director of several successful insurance and financial technology companies, Tom has dedicated his career to risk management.

After working as a consultant at McKinsey, Tom served for 10 years as the CEO of Risk Management Solutions, a pioneer in providing risk modeling software, data, and analytics services related to catastrophic risks within the insurance industry. His insurance career continued as CEO of White Mountains Re and board director of several insurance and reinsurance companies including XL Group, Safeco, Montpelier Re, Centre Cat, and Palomar Specialty.

Tom currently serves as managing partner at XL Innovate, the same fund that created and invested in New Energy Risk at its onset. He is a board director at several private and venture-backed companies, including SoFi, a leader in consumer lending, serving as interim CEO from September 2017 to March 2018. He is also a board director of Lemonade, a revolutionary personal lines insurance carrier; Slice Labs, a provider of on-demand insurance in the sharing economy; and Windward, the leader in maritime risk insights.

Tom earned his BA in Economics and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and his MBA from Harvard Business School. Tom is involved in several nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on secondary school education and environmental issues. He recently served as the president of trustees at Phillips Exeter Academy.
