We Are Hiring!

Business Development Manager

Posting Date:  December 2020
Schedule:         Full Time
Location:          San Francisco Bay Area, CA

Position Summary

New Energy Risk (NER) has reached an inflection point across several high-growth sectors with enormous potential. Inbound deal flow has accelerated and we now have the increasing need to hire a self-starting individual who can work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues to be responsible for outward day-to-day interactions with clients in NER’s most established verticals (bioeconomy, waste to energy, energy storage, energy efficiency). The business development manager will report to the managing director, business development. If your ideal job is in a start-up environment structuring innovative financial instruments to accelerate the deployment of breakthrough technologies that address global challenges, come join us.

NER is a unique company at the intersection of technical diligence and structured project financing. An ideal applicant for the business development manager will have skills relating to both of these disciplines and responsibilities, with an emphasis on commercial experience:

NER uses a variety of enterprise sales channels, including direct origination, as well as partnerships with insurance brokers and industry stakeholders. The business development manager must comfortably, confidently, and (for the most part) independently lead and manage client engagements. Since NER generally supports project financing, the business development manager should have a broad understanding of the startup financial lifecycle and project financing. We recognize a variety of experiences could be valuable. These include but are not limited to: technical, enterprise and/or direct sales; strategic partnerships; banking; or related professional services involved in project development.

NER’s clients are technology and project developers that are commercializing novel technologies. We sometimes encounter deal flow that challenges laws of physics and thermodynamics. To have an informed conversation with our pipeline clients about their technology and projects, to understand their projects’ technical risk profiles, and to evaluate them in the context of other market participants requires a technical background relevant to at least one of NER’s core segments: bioeconomy, waste to energy, energy storage, energy efficiency. An ideal candidate will be broadly familiar with technical and commercial trends in the renewable energy and low-carbon sectors, and further, will have experience with aspects of technical project development (which may include but is not limited to EPC contracts, FEED processes, failure-mode/root cause analysis, and related risk-mitigation concepts). Among other responsibilities, the business development manager will be responsible for independently reviewing technical and commercial data provided by clients early in the sales process.

Day-to-day tasks for the business development manager include but are not limited to:

  • Traveling to prospect and client sites
  • Attending and speaking at conferences and workshops
  • Phone, video, and email communication with clients and partners
  • Reviewing data rooms for both technical and commercial content
  • Utilizing and regularly updating our Salesforce CRM
  • Managing standard business documents (e.g. NDAs)
  • Drafting term sheets and engagement letters
  • Coordinating internally with the business development and technical diligence teams

With considerations in place for COVID-19 restrictions and CDC guidelines, eventual domestic and occasional international travel to client sites for audits and site visits will be required (approximately 30%).
